Accor × Dastkar
Strengthening artisan livelihoods through design, enterprise development and access to markets
2013–2015
About the Project
Supported by the Solidarity Accor Foundation and implemented by Dastkar, Crafting Opportunities was a livelihood development initiative aimed at strengthening traditional craft communities across India. The programme brought together design development, entrepreneurship training, financial assistance and market access to help artisan groups build sustainable enterprises. Through design workshops, business development support and participation in Dastkar’s Nature Bazaar, the initiative sought to connect traditional skills with evolving market opportunities, while strengthening the capacities of artisan-led organisations.
Crafts & Communities
The programme engaged a diverse network of craft groups working across traditional textile, weaving, embroidery, leather and craft practices. These included Bandhani and Shibori artisans from Rajasthan, Kota Doria weavers, Chikankari practitioners from Uttar Pradesh, Blue Pottery makers, Bidri artisans from Karnataka, Moonj craft communities from Uttar Pradesh, Kalam Patua artists from West Bengal, and leather craft groups from Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh, among others.
Each group received support shaped around its craft and organisational needs, from developing new designs and improving product presentation to strengthening costing, entrepreneurship and market readiness. Particular attention was given to women-led groups and communities seeking greater economic opportunities through their traditional skills.
